Michelle Miller is at the UW-Madison Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems, the sustainable agriculture research center. A Wisconsin native, she is a practicing economic anthropologist engaged in participatory research with farmers and others who create our food system. Michelle grew up in the cooperative movement, learning about coops through the Wisconsin Farmers Union youth program, where she helped organize many a candy coop at summer camp. She served on the Williamson Street Grocery Coop board from 1993-2001 while working for World Wildlife Fund on pesticide reduction. Her husband worked for North Farm, a coop food distributor and her parents were labor organizers. Current projects focus on labor and land tenure, agriculture of the middle and regional food economies, food freight logistics, resiliency and climate change.
