Gerry Sexton is Chief Explorer for GrowthWorks Inc., a Minnesota firm that offers facilitation for strategic planning and organization change and development, as well as leadership coaching and team building. He is co-author of Leading Innovation: Creating Workplaces Where People Excel So Organizations Thrive – a how-to book for leaders committed to engaging the people they lead.
He and his partner, Brian McDermott, bring a unique mix of experience and approach to their work. They facilitate, train, and consult based on the conviction people come to their work with good intentions and a wealth of wisdom, creativity, and passion. They have extensive co-op-related experience, including working with Seward Community Co-op since 2005, and with others such Willy Street Co-op, The Wedge, The Merc, Lakewinds, Valley Natural Foods, Just Foods, and National Cooperative Grocers. Brian and Gerry designed and facilitated owner- and staff-engagement processes for Mississippi Market and Eastside Food Co-op in the early stages of their expansion planning, and designed and facilitated Town Hall meetings for The Wedge/Linden Hills/Eastside consolidation project.
Gerry’s background is in aeronautics – and medicine. He earned an aeronautical degree and a commercial pilot’s license from the University of North Dakota. Then he earned his second degree – his Doctorate of Medicine – at the University of Texas in San Antonio. Before GrowthWorks, he spent five years at the Calhoun Beach Club, first running the health fitness center and later serving as the General Manager, leading a team or more than 200 employees.
