Brian McDermott is Chief Storyteller for GrowthWorks Inc., a Minnesota firm that offers facilitation for strategic planning and organization change and development, as well as leadership coaching and team building. He is co-author of Leading Innovation: Creating Workplaces Where People Excel So Organizations Thrive – a how-to book for leaders committed to engaging the people they lead.
Brian and his partner, Gerry Sexton, bring a unique mix of experience and approach to their work. They facilitate, train, and consult based on the conviction people come to their work with good intentions and a wealth of wisdom, creativity, and passion. They have extensive co-op-related experience, including working with Seward Community Co-op since 2005, and with others such Willy Street Co-op, The Wedge, The Merc, Lakewinds, Valley Natural Foods, and National Cooperative Grocers. Brian has facilitated Seward Co-op’s Board of Directors monthly meetings since 2006. He and Gerry designed and facilitated owner- and staff-engagement processes for Mississippi Market and Eastside Food Co-op during expansion planning, and designed and facilitated Town Hall meetings for The Wedge/Linden Hills/Eastside consolidation project.
Brian’s background is in journalism. Before GrowthWorks, he worked for newspapers, magazines, in corporate communications, and for a leading U.S. publisher in the training, human resources, and management areas. He also co-authored Time Out for Leaders: Daily Inspiration for Maximum Impact and was the lead writer on the books Versatile Selling: Adapting Your Style So Customers Say ‘Yes,” and The Social Styles Handbook: Find Your Comfort Zone and Make People Feel Comfortable with You.
